REDD+ Matavén, protecting forests and strengthening Indigenous communities in Colombia
In the department of Vichada, where the Orinoquía meets the Amazon, lies the Matavén Indigenous Reserve, the territory where the REDD+ Matavén project takes place.
This landscape spans more than two million hectares, including over one million hectares of tropical forest. It is home to Indigenous communities whose knowledge, governance, and deep relationship with the land have sustained this ecosystem for generations.
Operating in this territory requires navigating highly complex logistical conditions, where access is limited and distances are vast. Despite this, Indigenous communities lead and implement the project on the ground, reinforcing their role as guardians of the forest.

Over time, this region has faced increasing pressures from activities that drive deforestation, such as agricultural expansion and illegal economies. For many communities, these were often the only available sources of income.
REDD+ Matavén was created to change that reality, offering a different path where protecting the forest becomes a viable and sustainable source of income, while strengthening the territory, its governance, and its people.
Carbon credits make this model possible. Each credit represents one ton of CO₂ emissions avoided through forest protection, verified under recognized standards.
Companies and individuals invest in these credits as part of their sustainability strategies, and this investment becomes the main source of funding for the project.

WHAT THIS MODEL ENABLES
Indigenous guards monitor forests; local governance and operational capacity improve; access to education, healthcare, water, and housing expands; food security and sustainable livelihoods grow; women’s participation is actively promoted; and traditional cultural values are preserved for future generations.
Through this model, resources are reinvested directly into the territory, enabling a comprehensive and integrated approach.
Indigenous guards monitor and protect the forest, governance structures are strengthened, transportation and operational capacity are improved in a remote and complex region, and access to education, healthcare, water, and housing is expanded.
At the same time, food security is strengthened and sustainable productive activities are developed, aligned with the communities’ knowledge, traditions, and ways of life.
This approach also promotes the active participation and empowerment of women, while respecting and preserving the cultural values and traditional practices that define the territory.
Without this integrated model, communities would face limited alternatives, increasing the risk of migration or engagement in activities that lead to deforestation. Instead, the project creates the conditions for communities to remain in their territory, protect the forest, and build a more resilient and sustainable future.
After more than a decade of implementation since 2013, the REDD+ Matavén Project has become a pioneering initiative in Latin America, with strong technical, operational, and governance capacities, and results that are continuously monitored and independently verified, contributing directly to global sustainable development goals.
